Information for Parents

This section provides parents with some general information for parents and carers.

What do I do when I arrive at Pre-School?

Your child will be greeted by staff and welcomed into preschool. Your child will put their coat and bag on the peg with their photo on. Staff can then easily identify which belongings are your child’s. Ensure all belongings are clearly labelled, as we have a lot of identical items.

Please do not leave any items in your child’s bag, such as creams or inhalers that other children should not have access to.

Please discourage your child from bringing toys from home; we have nowhere to store them, and children get upset if they are lost in Pre-School or leave them behind.

On arrival for their session, your child will have a name card and they should stick this to the board.

What do I do when I collect from Pre-School?

You will wait in the playground to collect your child, standing where they will be able to see you. A member of staff will be at the main door and hand over your child directly to you or whoever is collecting them. Please ensure you are on time, as children can become distressed if a parent is not there. If you are delayed, please phone us so we can reassure your child that you are on your way. Persistent lateness will incur a fee.

Each child has a named drawer, and staff will check it at the end of every session for letters and belongings that need to come home.

If you are unexpectedly unable to collect your child, we ask that you telephone us to inform us of the details of the person you have authorised to collect your child on your behalf. When that person arrives at Pre-School, we will ask them for the password, agreed with your keyperson when your child starts Pre-School. We will not allow anyone to collect your child without following these agreed procedures.

What are Tapestry and Makaton?

We use Tapestry to record your child’s learning. You can add to your child’s record at any time. Children love to share photos of family time, and these can be easily added.

Strong links between home and Pre-School ensure your child receives the best possible Pre-School experience.

We use Makaton in Pre-School. It is the use of signing to support language development. Please ask the staff if you would like more information.

What happens when my child first starts at Pre-School?

Each child is an individual and therefore we have a flexible settling in procedure. Your child’s keyperson will discuss with you on a daily basis how best to integrate your child into the setting including dropping off and collection times.

We have created a mindful cosy relaxing area for children to use when they want time away from activities or feel overwhelmed.

Where can I find information about Safeguarding and other policies?

Safeguarding is always a priority at Greenslade.

Deborah Williams is the member of staff designated safeguarding lead, and Beverly is the Committee-named lead for safeguarding.

All our policies and procedures take safeguarding into consideration, and copies of these can be found on the policy section of this website (see link below).

Mobile phones are not permitted to be used within the Pre-School. We ask that you keep your phone out of sight when on Pre-School property- both inside and outside.

OUR POLICIES

My child needs to some medication administered

We can administer prescribed medication to your child during the session if required. However, you will need to fill in the appropriate forms before any medication can be administered.

Please do not leave any items in your child’s bag such as creams or inhalers that other children should not have access to.

What food and drink do you provide and what does my child need to bring?

We encourage healthy eating at Greenslade and only have milk or water to drink.

At snack time, children have fruit or vegetable and a savoury snack. All children are encouraged to try this. They do not have to eat it all, but should try it.

We ask you to send a bottle of water into Pre-School with your child every session. This must be clearly labelled and easy for your child to open to enable them to have a drink at any time they choose.

At lunchtime, everyone sits at the table to eat lunch. We encourage children to eat their sandwiches first, then fruit, then yoghurt, then biscuits and crisps. We do not ban any food, but we encourage children to eat the healthier options first.

We want children to become independent and able to open packets, zips, and Tupperware boxes themselves in preparation for them starting school.

Lunch boxes must contain an ice pack as per statutory requirements.

What should my child wear to Pre-School?

All belongings must be clearly labelled. We advise you to dress your child in clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or damaged.

Our front play area is amazing, but unfortunately, the black colour of the safety surface does transfer onto shoes, clothing and children! We have tried to have this problem resolved but unfortunately there is no way to prevent it happening.

How do you communicate information?

We understand the importance of keeping you informed and are constantly looking at ways to relay information to you.

The whiteboards are a valuable source of weekly information. We have this website and a Facebook page.

We send a weekly information email and communicate via Tapestry. Staff will also talk to you in person. If you have any questions, please ask them.

The best way to stay informed and influence changes is to join the committee (see below).

It is important that you also keep us informed of anything that may affect your child.

OUR COMMUNICATIONS

Is there anything I can do to help at Pre-School?

Greenslade is a committee run Pre-School. Without a committee we cannot continue.

All parents are invited to join the committee. The variety of experience and skills parents bring to the meetings help ensure we remain a high quality setting providing the best possible experience you would wish for your child.

Committee members offer their opinions and vote on any changes such as opening hours and fees, plan fundraising activities and help us look at how to remain sustainable.

If you do not wish to be on the committee there are many ways you can help such as taking home washing occasionally, DIY or gardening.
